Apple just replaced the space gray HomePod mini with a new midnight color option. Monday’s change to the company’s smart speaker lineup is hardly monumental — you might not even be able to see the difference.
Still, the new midnight HomePod mini is also “green.” Apple made it using 100% recycled mesh fabric.
Apple tweaks HomePod mini colors with new midnight option
HomePod mini is the cheaper version of Apple’s smart speaker. Despite its smaller size, it packs a full-range driver and dual passive radiators for deep bass and surprising sound quality, according to the Cult of Mac review.
The product launched in 2020 in white and space gray, and 2021 brought three new color options. On Monday, Apple dropped the space gray option and brought in a midnight one. As noted, the difference is nearly unnoticeable.
The change is that the mesh for the new version is made of recycled fabric. This probably resulted in a slight divergence in color, hence the new version name. The other four HomePod mini color options remain unchanged.

More about Apple’s miniature smart speaker
Although small, Apple built plenty of features into this smart speaker. For example, you can pair two HomePod minis for stereo sound. The device also functions as a smart home hub, with Thread networking capabilities for additional functionality. It comes with Apple’s Ultra Wideband chip inside to enable proximity effects.
Although it comes with a simple touchscreen on top, the HomePod mini is designed to be primarily controlled with spoken Siri commands. That’s why it packs four far-field microphones for picking up voices from a distance. The device even includes a temperature and humidity sensor.
